What is your role at DCB?
To ensure timelines compliance with all special education laws, procedures and mandates by overseeing the process from Child Find to exiting from services. The SPED Manager also coordinates mandated meetings and services, as well as supervises all related service positions for the purpose of IEP compliance and effectiveness.
What is your educational background?
I attended school in Guatemala City until the age of 15. I then moved to Maryland with my family and attended High Point High School from 9th-12th grade. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at the University of Maryland in College Park, and after teaching third grade for 6 years, I later returned to my alma mater for a master’s degree in special education.
How are you available to help parents and families?
I can support parents and families with any questions they may have about our special education program at DC Bilingual and our full continuum of services!
Why are you passionate about your work?
I’m passionate about my work because I believe that every student can learn. It’s important to me that each student is provided with all of the supports needed to be able to access their education, and be able to become an active member of their community.
What made you decide to follow this career path?
From a very early age I knew that teaching was the career that I wanted to pursue. I loved learning and was always very curious about the world around me. I appreciated my teachers for helping me discover so many “Aha!” moments, and I developed a strong desire to help others experience those moments too!
What about DCB appeals to you?
DCB appeals to me because it’s important to me to work alongside like-minded individuals that value and believe in DCB’s mission. The focus on community, academic achievement in both English and Spanish, leadership and valuing of all cultures makes DCB a very appealing place to work and grow as a professional.
